Today we had the pleasure of welcoming the Casa Grande Special Olympic Bocce Team to our green. The visit was to introduce them to the world of lawn bowling. The result was something bigger — smiles, focus, encouragement, and a few ‘jack dances’ by our guests. From the explanation under the shade structure to confident deliveries on the mat, it was fun to watch curiosity turn into skill. They will be returning next Tuesday during Park Can/AM — and this time they’ll be giving us a demonstration of their lawn bowling skills.  A heartfelt thank you to all of our volunteers who came out to help with the training. Your patience, guidance, and enthusiasm made the day special.
Below are a few highlights from their visit:

Ross explains the similarities and differences between Bocce and Lawn Bowling before heading out to the green.

Moving to the green and getting ready for hands-on instruction.

Ted worked with Greg and Madison on delivery and line.

Fred demonstrates proper stance and follow-through.

Carolyn coaching with encouragement and steady guidance.

Steve offers tips on grip and release.

Great form by Madison — smooth delivery and excellent focus.

The Casa Grande Special Olympic Team at the green —  a job well done.

It was more than a lesson. It was connection, confidence, and community — exactly what our club is about. We look forward to seeing everyone next Tuesday for the return visit! Special thank you to Ross and Laverne for the work they put into making this happen!

FUN BOWL Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day…..especially if your name is Steve Poseler! Steve managed to win the ‘big bucks’ ….although Becky may have snagged them on the way home! Nothing like a ‘money game’ to bring the best out in Steve.

Congrats to Tommy who almost hit his ‘grand slam’. He had to settle for just a home run with a second place finish. Congrats Tommy!  Henry managed to roll his way to third place. Watch out for Henry. His new knee has been “broken-in” and he is on a roll!  Janet managed to win “The Prize” but only because a few bowlers with lower scores didn’t stick around! Congrats Janet. Glad you are smiling!

The General Meeting and Pizza Social were well attended with almost 100 members and guests signed up! Great turnout….thank you! Our hungry team did a good job of devouring the Barros pizzas.

Our Bowl Washing Worker Bee was a shining success, thanks to the many hands, smiling faces, and good spirits that showed up to pitch in.

From the first rinse to the final shine, the laughter flowed as freely as the water. Bowls were scrubbed, boxes were cleaned, bowling stories swapped and the atmosphere buzzed with the energy that makes the club a great place to spend time.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated. Whether you washed, dried, organized, encouraged, or simply created the atmosphere (Bernie!) your help was appreciated.

Special thanks to Carolyn, Nancy and Dede for providing the buckets, soap, clothes and towels.

Congratulations to the washers that found the ‘prize box’ of 0000 bowls. . They were sitting in a gooey pool of what looked like sunscreen cream.  Steve and Becky were scrubbing away at the bowls for a long time while Laverne and a team were trying to clean and repair the box. All ended up good but it was a mess!

It may be the first bowl washing day in the club’s history. Our VP, Carolyn, was the driving force behind the idea.  If you use the club bowls and no longer have to wonder what might be on them, give her a quick thank you when you see her next.

A few weeks ago we inventoried the club bowls. In addition to obtaining the number and sizes of our bowls we learned the bowls and the boxes are very dirty. They could really use a wash, scrub and polish.

On Tuesday afternoon after the jitney we had a bowl wash…. definitely an activity where ‘many hands’ made the work light. With new bowls costing $400 plus we are fortunate to have so many sets of bowls. Taking care of them will prolong their life.

Can you guess who the workers are in the picture?????

SATURDAY 1/10
The winner of the Fun Bowl on Saturday is a shy person and we weren’t going to share the fact that he won, so he wouldn’t get any extra attention that might make him uncomfortable, but since we always share the winners …..

He is notorious for knocking for the pins or getting minus points for the ditches, sprinkler hole and rubber tires. It was really cold and everyone but him were wearing mittens and gloves which may have helped his score.

Despite a great turnout of 44 bowlers he prevailed.  Congrats to Steve Slankard for coming out on top.  When you see him today or the next couple of days, congratulate him on the win and give him a big hug. It will help get him over his shyness!

CHRISTMAS FUN BOWL 2025

WEDNESDAY 12/3
We have a new pair of bowlers leading the UBC activity this year. Thanks to Rick and Krista for stepping up and volunteering to organize the weekly game.

Like Fun Bowl, UBC is a unique way of playing with different rules and scoring. Come and try it at least once…..you might keep coming back!  The event starts shortly after the regular jitney. Some bowlers do both the Thursday jitney and UBC….others just do UBC.  Mark your calendar!

Monday 12/1
The award for “Best Dressed” last Friday goes to our VP, Carolyn Reeves and Wes Libby. Looking very “snazzy” they’re ready to bowl!

Monday 11/17
Big thank you to the membership for the excellent turnout for our first Fun Bowl. Despite questionable skies we had 48 bowlers come out for an afternoon of bowling and fun.

Our Fun Master, Ross Holcomb, and his crew of Steve Slankard and Steve Posler did not disappoint. They created a challenging and interesting course to test our skills. The administrative support from Celine, Margie and Dede provided smooth registration and timely team organization. On behalf of the members….thank you for making it all work.

Congrats to Ross Holcomb on bowling the highest score and Gaetz Charette for coming second. Nancy Slankard did win a prize but you will have to ask her what she won it for!

MORE-
Our daily Jitneys begin for the season this week.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday the teams will have a mix of bowlers with various experience and skill.  This is optimal for mentoring and development within the club.

Tuesday and Thursday the teams will reflect ‘bowling with your peers’. Teams composed of bowlers with similar skills (determined by jewel color) will bowl against each other.

This year we have five Draw Masters (Lorna, Gaetz, Steve S, Mike C and Lavern (Linda will fill in for Laverne until Jan). Each Draw Master has been assigned a day of the week. On ‘their day’ they will create the teams either through a random draw process or assignment process.

On Monday the Draw Master is Leona. She will create teams and assign rinks using the ‘random draw’ process. This will be our first time utilizing the ‘random’ method in a few years so please be patient as we establish the process. Place your name on the board by 12:30 so we can get started on time.

Sunday 11/16
This year’s Draw Masters are Gaetz, Lorna, Steve Slankard, Mike Caldwell and Lavern. They will help with member concerns regarding team make up and lane assignments. Each Draw Master will control the draw one day per week. They will use a random method for selecting the teams.

As we ramp activity back up we will work to keep everyone in touch with what is happening.
